The Process

We've started our big letters! We've traced the outlines of the letters using the big screen and we were the first to accomplish it. So we felt ahead of everyone except when we decided to do the very difficult task of duck taping the sides of the letters. Though it would've been easier to paint them like everyone else, the point of the duck tape was to "disrupt" the norm by doing something different.

Disrupt

Verb
-Interrupt (an event, activity, or process) by causing a disturbance or problem
-Drastically alter or destroy the structure of (something)

Though we didn't drastically alter the constitution of the letters, we altered the normal constitution of the sides by adding duck tape to them instead of paint, like everyone else.

For some reason, I took most of the photos and as such, I wasn't in any of them :(.  But anyhow here are a few photos of our process.

Duck taping the insides of the letters were the most difficult. We used two different types of glue— Gorilla super glue and hot glue. In the end, though the super glue was faster, the hot glue looked better by the end.

What is Language?

We started the next project, and for one of the first tasks, we had to make 3D letters!

I made the "I", "S", and "U" (not pictured above). It was surprisingly difficult and took a large amount of time to do only one letter. After a while and a hard time getting started, I took a study break with my roommates and luckily they were willing to cut things out and help! And even more luckily, one of my roommates is a crafted and knew how to make 3D letters so she taught me some tricks that worked wonderfully and made the process a bit faster!

We combined all of our letters during class today to make our word "disrupt"and in the end, we decided that we liked the different scale of letters because when we install them, the differently scaled letters will 'disrupt' the viewer from their day and they'll have to pay attention to what they're looking at.

First Process Book for "What is Design?" Project

Today our first process books were due and last night I had just a few more pages to get through. I naively thought that I would quickly finish them.... it took me 6 hours to complete it and then I couldn't print it at Watson because for some reason my flash drive wouldn't work and then the file was too big to upload or to send over the wifi, so I couldn't print it the night before the project was due and that in itself brought night mares during the night. I couldn't print it at my hall either because the printer only printed in black and white. And Kimmie (my roommate) needed help with Econ so we were up until 3:30am. She made me a cup of coffee that came back to haunt me because I don't drink coffee (much prefer tea) and then because I don't normally have that kind of concentrated caffeine, I became jittery and my head and tummy started to hurt (still do) and I couldn't sleep well.
Anyways, this morning I printed it on my computer and it'll be fine....

I'm so tired and yet I have a bajillion things to complete tonight as well.

Hallmark Symposium from 9/17

Okay the guest speaker was from Germany and named Dietmar Gotzelmann and it was a really boring, to be honest. It was so sad because he was so genuine but he was just so incredibly boring! He started off by saying what he did and then introduced the process and then walked us through the process in application to his job and projects. It all made sense but just presented in a general and uninteresting way. We were lectured at and it never goes well when you're just lectured at, especially when it's late and you've just eaten or are eating during the class. I felt so bad for the guy.
All in all, his process seemed rather interesting though. He talked about the different steps in implementing a design for a university in Germany. First, understanding the project and when needs to be done and who the audience is and the generational differences. So his firm had to create signs all over campus to direct traffic and display the names of the buildings. They brainstormed text, style, fonts, colors, sizes in order to efficiently display the needed information and they settled with a speech bubble style that had the more important buildings in larger letters as well as the lesser buildings in smaller letters. They spent a while doing trials at the locations and choosing places for optimum accessibility and in a place where there was a heavy flow of traffic so they can be put to the best use. Then finally, after all of that they were able to complete the project. Gotzelmann emphasized  the necessity of sustainability to create a longer lasting design.

Poster Presentations

Our Class's presentations and final posters kicked butt! They completely exemplified the creative part of design and were not only the best posters (after touring through all of the design classes) but they were also the most diverse in style. Which is amazing!! One of the classes we visited had all of the posters really using the grid as a style and it looked like a powerpoint and not impressive at all. Everyone said that our posters were the best!!!

Here's some pictures from the wall!

Finished Poster!!

I've finally finished my poster! Hoorah! In the end though I hated it, instead of being really proud. Okay well maybe I didn't exactly hate it but it wasn't something I particularly liked by the end. And I'm not even sure why! I mean I really liked the design but the work of Philippe Starck's that was inside the design wasn't very good. It was really difficult though to incorporate everything and honestly I'm not exactly sure how I would have changed anything except minute details, so that's unfortunate. Anyways here is the finished poster!

Poster Layout Final rough draft

Working on layout for my poster and it's pretty rough, to be honest. I like the design.. something I took off pinterest.

But in the end I chose this design because it had rough edges and grey like a typical industrial designer. Although Philippe Starck is a very versatile designer, he's most famous for his product and industrial creations, so in the end I decided to play off of that aspect more. The squares and very "sleek" (for lack of better word) look also add to the industrial look. It's the best area of cohesion between his designs that I could find.
Also, I learned how to work InDesign tonight at the workshop. Well, learned how to work what I could...honestly I thought they would teach us some things for beginners but instead it was more of a place for them to help us on the things we needed help on for our poster. But it was indeed helpful and I did learn a lot. My poster is now in the computer in InDesign, though it still looks pretty rough as well. Hopefully tomorrow's class will help me straighten some things out and get it looking more coherent and professional and something to be proud of.

Poster layout

Let's be real, my poster was crappy. It was blocky and like a typical high school poster that someone shares to their class. So I've decided to beef up my layout design. I found a lot of inspiration from Pinterest— thank goodness there's something like Pinterest to keep me sane! I seriously love it!

I'm thinking of these two designs because of the sharp edges for the hard and sleek lines of the industrial design world however, I'm not exactly sure how buildings would look or non landscape photos.
His designs are both diverse with bubbled and straight lines. So I'm still just going through design layouts and figuring out the essence of his designs and how to implement it into my poster design.

Philippe Starck

I got Philippe Starck as my project designer! He's an architect, interior and industrial designer. His work is innovative, sleek and a force to be reckoned with. We would recognize his work from the TedTalk we had to watch that featured his juicer.

As a world renown designer, he inspires and promotes a cohesive environment that can be used by many.
