Material Play

Reflection of paperclip challenge activity

In class we repurposed paperclips to create items. Throughout time, many simple items have been redesigned or used in a different way than the original to suit a different purpose. A rock, for instance, was once used as a nutcracker and then again, carved to kill other animals instead of just left on the ground as it’s original function. We took twenty minutes in class to transform paper clips into as many useful things as we could. Something that could be a tool, a toy, or wearable and something that can enhance, support, extend or display a meaning or purpose. I created four items: a stand or holder, a bowtie, a picture holder, and a hook. After labeling our creations, we walked around the room and other rooms to observe their work. The most common objects were hooks, holders and stands for phones and other objects, and finally, jewelry. Some of the most interesting items were toys or objects that no one else thought of. And finally, we were asked to recreate our best item for next class. I chose to recreate my bowtie.
